6:00 pm	2006/2007 Bowl Preview Soiree For the second cons... 2006/2007 Bowl Preview Soiree For the second consecutive year, I'm running a Bowl Confidence Pool to liven up the college postseason. To most, Rice vs. Troy sounds like Konami's failed attempt to make an NFL-version of their famed "Jordan vs. Bird" Nintendo game, but to somebody who took Rice for 32; why it's quite possibly the biggest game of the year. The lesson, as always: Gambling makes things more fun. I always do pretty well in these things; last year I won my inagural pool and the year before my dad and I finished 9th out of 120. Considering I watch little college football, this has always surprised me. But then when I think of how miserable I am at NCAA Tournament pools despite watching college basketball nonstop from November to March, I guess it makes sense. I rarely do research while filling out my brackets because of all the preconceived notions I've developed for each team. For the confidence pool, however, I have my print-outs of the Vegas lines, each team's schedules and stat sheets and a plethora of expert opinions from across the internet. Maybe I should not watch any basketball this season and see if it helps come March. Anyway, with the bowl season kicking off tonight when TCU and Northern Illinois meet in the fabled Poinsettia Bowl, here are my picks and confidence number for each game. Poinsettia – 12/19 TCU vs. Northern Illinois I'm going all-in on the first hand of the tournament. My buddy Antzo did this once and, predictably, busted out. He lasted a full 17 seconds. And, no. I'll resist making the obvious joke. Pick: TCU (32) Pioneer – 12/21 BYU vs. Oregon When in doubt, go with the Mormons... And the team whose uniforms don't burn a hole through your retina. Pick: BYU (4) New Orleans – 12/22 Rice vs. Troy Mono-syllabic colleges of the world, rejoice! Pick: Rice (11) Papa Johns – 12/23 South Florida vs. East Carolina You know how during bowl games there is always the awkward, requisite chat with the CEO of the title sponser? I think I'm going to be pretty disappointed if, during this game, Holly Rowe is interviewing anyone other than Papa John himself. Pick: South Florida (12) New Mexico – 12/23 New Mexico vs. San Jose St. I had a fairly good joke about the Spartans playing the Aztecs and how Mel Gibson - well, you kind of had to be there. But then I remembered that New Mexico's mascot is the Lobo and New Mexico State's is the Aggie, not the Aztec, so I really don't know where I was going with the whole thing. Pick: San Jose St. (3) Armed Forces – 12/23 Tulsa vs. Utah Remember when Utah was the toast of college football and playing in a BCS Bowl just two years ago? Now they're playing Tulsa in a ridiculously-named game and making me fret for ten minutes before picking them and assigning a whopping confidence level of 2. Pick: Utah (2) Hawaii – 12/24 Arizona State vs. Hawaii Playing Hawaii at Hawaii is sort of like playing tennis with Hef at the Playboy Mansion. Even though you might be a superior player, the distractions are too big to mount. And now that I've gotten my triple-entendre out of the way, let's move on.Pick: Hawaii (23) Motor City – 12/26 Mid. Tennessee. vs. Cent. Mich. Nothing says college football like a match-up in Detroit between two vaguely-median-directional-named schools. Pick: Central Michigan (31) Emerald – 12/27 Florida State vs. UCLA FSU mailed it in weeks ago. Luckily for them, though, Adrian McPherson mugged the mailman. Pick: UCLA (21) Independence – 12/28 Oklahoma State vs. Alabama I'd be slightly more excited about this one if it were a basketball game. Slightly. Pick: Oklahoma State (8) Holiday – 12/28 California vs. Texas A&M I seem to remember drunkenly watching Army nearly upset Texas A&M a few months ago. This was either a very strange dream or all the evidence I need to pick against the Aggies. Pick: California (13) Texas – 12/28 Rutgers vs. Kansas State Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has done a marvelous job in turning the Scarlet Knights into a force in the Big East conference. He was rewarded for this with the Home Depot National Coach of the Year Award. Not nominated was Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe. Not only was Grobe's lack of nomination a travesty; but it would have been absurd if Grobe wasn't a unanimous choice to win! Schiano brought Rutgers back last year, when they finished 7-4 and earned a berth in the Insight.com Bowl. This year, Rutgers was 4th in the Big East preseason poll, which was nearly accurate - they finished 3rd. On the other hand, Wake Forest hadn't been to a bowl since 2003, went 4-7 in 2005 and was picked last in their division in the ACC Preseason poll. Nobody, and I mean nobody, expected Wake Forest to finish with 11 wins and the ACC Title. Their storybook season is easily the biggest surprise in college football since Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl in 1996. With Rutgers, there were hints that they'd be a solid team this year. With Wake, there were none. Factor in the fact that the team's starting QB and RB went down in early September and Grobe should have won in a landslide. This it to take nothing away from Schiano, but Jim Grobe was clearly the best coach in college football this year. (No joke; as I was typing this I received a text from my cousin that said "grobe ap coach of year". So maybe I'll just shut up.) Pick: Rutgers (24) Music City – 12/29 Clemson vs. Kentucky Hillbillies of the world, unite! Pick: Clemson (26) Sun - 12/29 Oregon State vs. Missouri If Abe Simpson refuses to recognize Missouri then, dammit, so do I. Pick: Oregon State (7) Liberty – 12/29 Houston vs. South Carolina When Steve Spurrier was coaching the Redskins, he actually earned a win against the NFL team from Houston. I know, I was amazed too. Pick: South Carolina (22) Insight – 12/29 Texas Tech vs. Minnesota Do you think Rocky Balboa is getting good reviews because everyone's expectations were so low, so when the movie didn't totally suck, they were thrilled and now believe it to be better than it actually was? Because that's kind of what I'm thinking. Pick: Texas Tech (25) Champs Sports – 12/29 Purdue vs. Maryland Only one person in my pool picked Purdue to win this game, and it's the guy who grew up rooting for the Terps and watched more of their games this season than anyone else in the pool (me). Translation: Bet the farm on the Terps. Pick: Purdue (10) Meineke – 12/30 Navy vs. Boston College I have two rules for the Christmas season: 1) In a bowl, never pick the team whose coach just made a lateral move to an intra-conference school. 2) Always rewind that Victoria's Secret commercial with Heidi Klum dressed as a sexy Santa Claus at least thrice. Pick: Navy (5) Alamo – 12/30 Texas vs. Iowa Was anyone else thrilled to hear that former Hawkeye Merton Hanks currently works as a uniform inspector for the NFL? Apparently he mills about on the field before the game and makes players change their shoes or socks or wristbands if those items don't jibe with NFL regulations. Frankly, Roger Goodell couldn't have a better man for the job, as Merton has extensive experience in fashion accrued from years of shopping at 'Big and Really Tall Neck' stores. Pick: Texas (28) Peach – 12/30 Georgia vs. Virginia Tech Antzo went to VT and our buddy Klinny went to Georgia. I'm holding out hope that by the end of this game, we'll have a situation like this. Pick: Virginia Tech (18) MPC Computers – 12/31 Miami vs. Nevada Let's hope Boise's leaders don't make light of the fact that Pick: Miami (15) Outback – 1/1 Tennessee vs. Penn State They closed the only Outback near where I live, so watching this game will likely be torturous, knowing that I may never taste the salty, fried goodness that is a Bloomin' Onion ever again. Pick: Tennessee (19) Cotton – 1/1 Auburn vs. Nebraska Up until this year, The Cotton Bowl was the only bowl game on FOX. I remember waking up hungover on New Year's Day and stumbling downstairs only to discover that Ron Pitts was the commentator for a game that was half-over and looked visually awful, as all FOX football broadcasts do. Sadly, the four of the five BCS games are on the network this year, so we're stuck with miserable 720p for the miserable "title game" that takes place a miserable seven days after the freakin' ball drops in Times Square. Way to go, NCAA! You make Gary Bettman look like Pete Rozelle. Pick: Auburn (6) Gator – 1/1 West Virginia vs. Georgia Tech On paper this game seems interesting, but I imagine I'll be watching a Real World marathon instead. Pick: West Virginia (20) Capital One – 1/1 Arkansas vs. Wisconsin This has the trappings of a great one, which usually means that it'll be a blowout by the team I picked against. Pick: Arkansas (1) Rose Bowl USC vs. Michigan At least one bowl can keep up the appearance of tradition. Pick: Michigan (16) Fiesta Bowl Boise State vs. Oklahoma Two people in my pool actually picked Boise State to upset Oklahoma. But, since they were the only two to pick Northern Illinois last night, I'm thinking I shouldn't be too concerned about picking the Sooners big. Pick: Oklahoma (30) Orange Wake Forest vs. Louisville I've been picking against Wake all year. Why stop now? (A more comprehensive game preview will follow next week.) Pick: Louisville (9) Sugar Notre Dame vs. LSU We are nothing without our traditions. A few of my holiday favorites are the Christmas Eve party at my parent's house, eating my aunt's delicious cookies on Christmas Day and The Wolfman picking whoever Notre Dame is playing for the most points. Pick: LSU (29) Inernational – 1/6 Cincinnati vs. Western Michigan GMAC – 1/7 Ohio vs. Southern Miss I can take the Bowl Coalition. I can take the corporate sponserships for each game. I can take the BCS, The Harris Interactive Poll and lame excuses against a playoff. Hell, I can even take the bastardizaton of New Year's Day bowl games. But what I cannot excuse are two mediocre bowls taking placing after January 1 and after the Rose, Orange, Cotton, Sugar and Fiesta Bowls. This is a travesty. Is nothing sacred? Picks: Cincinatti (14), Southern Miss (17) BCS Championship – 1/8 Florida vs. Ohio State Last year I won my pool because I picked Texas to beat USC, even though I thought at the time USC was probably going to win. I tried to stick with that plan again this season but since I can't even fathom Florida keeping this game close, I took OSU for big points and hitched my fortune to Central Michigan and Purdue. 1:40 pm	Marshawn Lynch Heisman Push Touted as a preseason Heisman candidate, Marshawn Lynch quickly fell off the radar after the Tennessee game, much like his team did in the national championship picture. Now, Marshawn is making a strong push for, at least, a spot at the ceremony in New York. Coach Tedford is also making a push for Marshawn stating, "I find it hard to believe that there are many football players better than him in the country." Below I list some popular Heisman watch lists and where Marshawn currently sits. Gene Menez, SI.com5. Marshawn Lynch, Cal, RB, Jr. Last week: 21 rushes, 150 yards, 2 TDs; 4 receptions, 53 yards in a 31-24 victory over Washington Season: 132 rushes, 907 yards, 8 TDs; 19 receptions, 216 yards, 3 TDs Heisman-o-meter: A member of this list last month, Lynch had been flirting with making a return. He finally does so after an impressive effort against the Huskies. Though he didn't start because of two sprained ankles, he dominated in the second half, once turning an aborted halfback pass into an impromptu cross-country tour that ended just shy of the goal line. He's here to stay. Up next: Nov. 4 vs. UCLA Richard Cirminiello, CFN.com 4. RB Marshawn Lynch, Cal Both his ankles may have been barking, but Lynch's mind was telling him to forge ahead in Cal's first tight game since the opener. With Washington refusing to go away, he carried the Cal offense in the second-half scoring the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter and the game-winner from 22 yards out after the Huskies sent the game to overtime on a Hail Mary pass at the end of regulation. Last Week: 21 carries for 150 yards and 2 TDs – 4 catches for 53 yards (Washington) This Week: Idle 2006 Season: 132 carries for 907 yards and 8 TDs – 19 catches for 216 yards and 3 TDs Barometer: RisingHeisman Pundit has Marshawn at #6. ESPN has him at #9. Looks like a strong game in a victory at USC would push him into Heisman contention even further. Jay Heater, Contra Costa Times has an interesting story about Marshawn's Heisman hopes (read article here). In his blog he even talks about how Marshawn's cart ride might have even helped his Heisman campaign (read blog here). Like they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Best of luck to Marshawn, but Troy Smith is running away with this award. Personally, I can't wait for the Desean Jackson Heisman push next year (www.djax1.com??). Remember Desmond Howard winning the Heisman? Now picture DJax making a diving TD catch next year against USC at Memorial Stadium then striking the Heisman pose on the back of a injury cart that Longshore is driving across the field. Last comment: AOL sports recently released the top 13 playmakers for college football. Marshawn comes in at the #3 spot with a mention of his cart driving skills. But more surprisingly, the top spot was given to Desean Jackson. Here is my favorite quote, "Trying to tackle Jackson is like trying to bring down a cheetah while wearing stilletos ... on ice". It's sleazy and unethical to doctor a photo when you're posting on something unimportant (eg., a photo "showing" an SC cheerleader "celebrating" a Texas touchdown in the last Rose Bowl), so why should it be tolerated in the context of political advocacy over life-and-death issues? And while we're at it, let's vow never to make a point by putting the likeness of an adversary in blackface. Amos & Andy has been off the air for fifty years, and those for whom that is still a visceral image are collecting Social Security. 6:16 pm	Butch Woolfolk - Where is he now? It seems appropriate to take a quick look back at the Michigan career of Harold "Butch" Woolfolk seeing that his son, Troy, just committed to Michigan. While Troy is a Defensive Back (likely CB), his dad was one of the best Michigan RBs of all time, playing from the 1978-81 seasons and earning All-America honors in his last year. So where is Butch now? Well, here, primarily. Born in Milwaukee and raised in Westfield, New Jersey, he has moved out near Houston, and seems to have made a great living for himself after a decent NFL career with the Giants, Oilers, and Lions. He is married with two sons. While at Michigan, Butch had quite a few memorable moments. While I didn't see him play live, I've seen some tapes, and I've heard plenty of glowing endorsements from "old-timers" (apologies to those over 40). ESPN Classic shows the 1981 Rose Bowl from time to time - keep an eye out. A few career highlights: - 1979 vs. Minnesota: 24 carries for 194 yards and 2 TDs. [31-21 Michigan victory] - 1979 vs. Wisconsion: 19 carries for 190 yards and 3 TDs. Includes a TD run of 92 yards!! [54-0 Michigan victory] - 1981 Rose Bowl vs. Washington: Named Rose Bowl MVP. 26 carries for 182 yards and 1 TD. [23-6 Michigan victory] - 1981 at Michigan State: 39(!) carries for 253 yards with NO TDs. Chris Perry-esque (or, rather, Perry was Woolfolk-esque). [38-20 Michigan victory] According to this helmet, Butch claims 3861 career yards rushing, but MGoBlue.com's Statistics Archive has him at 3,850 yards rushing, with 29 TDs and a 5.4 yards per carry average. Either way, not too shabby. Random factoid: Butch’s former Michigan teammate Mike Boren will also have a son at Michigan while Butch’s son, Troy, is there. Justin Boren will be a Freshman at Michigan this year and should be a staple in the Offensive Line over the next few years. MHS band students to march in Rose Bowl Parade Carol Brimm Three Mustang High School band students were selected for the 2007 Oklahoma All Star Centennial Marching Band. Cory Johnson, trumpet; Brian Kriegh, trumpet; and Megan Coatney, clarinet; each faced stiff competition as they auditioned to become a part of the band which will represent the state of Oklahoma at the Rose Bowl, Disneyland, and numerous parades throughout Oklahoma. The 150-member band will participate in opening ceremonies at the Rose Bowl and will be the first marching band to lead the parade on Jan. 1, 2007. Oklahoma will also have two floats in the parade. Students were required to be in the ninth, tenth or eleventh grades in April 2006 and maintain a 3.0 grade point average to be eligible for the band. Johnson received a waiver because he will not enter ninth grade until school begins this fall. Oklahoma’s All Star Centennial Band was created by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission in celebration of Oklahoma’s Centennial in 2007 and the state is paying all expenses for the band. Each student will receive uniforms, instruments, special music, a band camp, travel costs, room and board, a scholarship to Northeastern State University and have the opportunity to work with Michael Davis who recently retired as the Band and Orchestra director for the Walt Disney World® Resort. The students will attend a band camp at the University of Oklahoma, July 24-28, 2006 in preparation for their first performance at the Oklahoma State Fair on Saturday, Sept. 16 with subsequent appearances at the Tulsa Parade on Nov. 11, 2006, Armed Forced Day at Fort Sill on May 18, 2007, the Bartlesville Centennial Parade on Aug. 1, 2007, the Oklahoma City Centennial Parade on Oct. 14, 2007, the Chandler Veterans Parade on October 14, 2007, and the Guthrie Inaugural Parade on November 16, 2007. The trip to southern California for the Rose Bowl is from Dec. 28, 2006 – Jan. 2, 2007. The band will march over 6 miles and play a medley of Oklahoma, How the West Was Won, and Our Good Nature, an original composition commissioned especially for the Centennial Celebrations. They will play the medley approximately 56 times during the parade. (Comment on this)

5:06 pm	Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then... Not satisfied with the pairing of Bama and Iowa in the title game to finish out my revenge dynasty, I opted instead to take on Leinart, Bush and company and used the "play now" function to pit Bama vs. Southern Cal at the Rose Bowl. Southern Cal won the toss and elected to receive, which was fine by me. Being the SEC neandrathal that I am, playing defense and sitting on a lead pretty well sums up my coaching strategy, and getting the ball to start the second half typically plays into that. The Trojans came out to start their first drive in an I formation as I called a reasonably safe Cover 2 Man out of my base 4-3. Their first play was a play action pass to a streaking Jarrett, but it was successfully batted away by Ramzee Robinson. The rest of the drive stalled as Bush is dropped for a 2 yard loss by DeMeco Ryans on a lead toss and Leinart completes a short pass to his Tight End for a 7 yard gain. Reggie Bush, meet DeMeco Ryans. Tyrone Prothro's return capabilites were completely nullified throughout the game as the SoCal special teams routinely forced me to call fair catch deep in my own territory. My own opening drive stalled as Ken Darby was stopped in the backfield on 1st down and DJ Hall dropped a pass on a wheel route to bring up 3rd and 12. I lined up in a shotgun spread formation as the Trojans looked to play a deep zone, but instead of trying to pass for the yardage I called a HB Direct Snap and picked up the first on the ground, but just barely. I came out to start the next series in an I formation and ran a triple option, handing the ball off to FB Tim Castille when the linebackers dropped back into coverage and plowed ahead for another first. Lining up again in the same I formation, I called a play action bootleg, but sailed the pass out of bounds to bring up 2nd and 10. Determined to burn the SoCal secondary, I lined up in a shotgun spread formation with Ken Darby lining up in the slot position in place of Zeke Knight. Both outside receivers were covered, but DJ Hall came free in the middle and caught a 22 yard pass at the Trojan 37. From there, Darby and Castille each ran the ball for modest gains, until on 3rd and 3 at the Trojan 11 Castille broke free for a TD. The point after is good, Bama 7, Southern Cal 0. Reggie Bush returns the ensuing kick off to his 37 yard line, but the Trojans again stall as Bush is nullified by the linebacking corp and the secondary keeps Leinart in check as the 1st quarter ends. Reggie Bush, meet DeMeco Ryans. Oh, you two have already met? Prothro again calls fair catch, starting the next Bama drive on the 26 yard line. A deep pass to Matt Caddell places us on the Trojan 34, but this drive stalls as well as neither Darby or Castille is able to break free for a first down. I briefly consider going for it on 4th and 3 but instead opt for the field goal, Bama 10, SoCal 0. The Trojans begin their next drive with only 2:27 left on the clock, and quickly score their first touchdown. Feeling a little full of myself, I call an "all out blitz" from a 3-3-5 formation and get burned big time as Reggie Bush breaks into the flat and jukes Roman Harper out of his cleats on his way to a 73 yard touchdown run. Bama 10, SoCal 7. The ensuing kickoff results in a touchback, and I start my next drive from my own 20 in an I formation. Again I call a play action bootleg and look to Caddell but the ball is tipped to bring up 2nd and 10. Darby breaks free on counter for 17 yards to get the first. Determined to score before the half, I go against everything I hold dear and begin passing on each down. Quick out routes and slants allow the Bama offense to move to the Trojan 30, but then disaster strikes as a touchdown pass to Prothro is tipped and subsequently intercepted near the goal line. The Trojans put together an impressive drive, including several circus catches and a miraculously accurate Leinart pass as he's engulfed by Freddie Roach, resulting in a Dwayne Jarrett 37 yard touchdown catch to make the score Bama 10, SoCal 14. Again, a touchback, and I attempt to drive at least into field goal range before the half but the Trojan defense has effectively limited my rushing attack and each receiver lives up to his real life counterpart's dropped pass potential. I punt with only :27 left on the clock as SoCal is content to call a few run plays and head into the locker room with a 4 point lead. Glad to get the ball back at the start of the third quarter, I manage a good return with DJ Hall to my own 39. Calling a play action pass, I hit Prothro for a 31 yard gain, followed by a HB Slam that sees Darby break loose for a 32 yard touchdown run, putting the good guys up by 3. SoCal's next drive stalls, and I get the ball back on my own 29. While sitting on a 3 point lead against a team that's proven it can strike quickly isn't exactly wise, I opt to begin pounding the ball and running the clock out. Darby, Castille, and Coffee all contribute as I drive into the Trojan red zone, only to see their defense stiffen and bring up 3rd and 14. I line up in my now familiar I formation, and hit Caddell for the touchdown to make the score Bama 24, SoCal 14. End Zone, meet Matt Caddell Again, SoCal seems eerily reluctant to cut Bush loose and the Bama secondary holds firm and forces a three and out to end the third quarter. Confident that the 4th quarter will be more of the same, I settle in to play defense and work the clock. Alas, I get greedy in the Trojan red zone, calling a play action pass to Prothro for a touchdown strike on 3rd and 3 instead of bulldozing ahead with a seemingly unstoppable Tim Castille. Again, disaster strikes as a Trojan CB intercepts the pass and returns it untouched to bring Southern Cal back within one score of winning. After the kick off and return to my own 22, I can't get anything going. On 3rd and 11, I toss a desperation pass to a streaking Prothro who has a few steps on the CB covering him. He makes the catch and heads downfield, but a safety appears as if from nowhere and lays a monster hit on him, forcing a fumble that the CB immediately falls on. It's now the Trojans' ball on their own 28, and my blood pressure rises to dangerous levels. Leinart moves into a hurry up offense as I stay in my base 4-3 and begin giving up yardage to Reggie Bush as he jukes and spins around anything lucky enough to get within an inch. Finally I halt the drive at my own 40 and sack Leinart on 3rd and long. Forced to go for it on 4th and 19, Leinart is unable to hook up with his Tight End and they turn the ball over on downs. I have the ball back on the Trojan 49, and immediately break loose with Darby on a HB direct to their 3, where I let Castille take the ball in to make the score Bama 31, SoCal 21, with 2:39 remaining. Matt Leinart, meet Jeremy Clark SoCal comes out passing again, but this time my secondary slips as Leinart drives the Trojans downfield and then delivers a long touchdown pass into double coverage, bringing them once again within three and me once again to my feet as I screamed a long string of profanities and felt my left arm go all tingly. The Trojans line up for an onside kick, but Glenn Coffee makes the catch and I breathe a huge sigh of relief. I've never seen an onside kick actually work in NCAA 2006, but I wouldn't put it past the computer in a close game to cheat up a little and recover it. With 1:56 to go the Trojans begin calling timeout after each run, but I keep getting first downs on my way to the Trojan 5 yard line. While I could have taken a knee and wrapped the game up, I instead channeled my inner Spurrier, sending Darby into the end zone one more time to make the final 38-28. Unnecessary, but fun. 11:09 am	Questions From An Elliptical Plane The good folks over at Burnt Orange Nation (which you should be reading [after this, of course]) have given us something to write about during the quiet days before August with their latest addition to the Blogpoll Roundtable. While not a card carrying member, or a member at all for that matter, the questions intrigued me enough to take a shot at them. Enjoy. 1) Which offseason story are you most tired of, and, on the flip side, interested in? (e.g. Reggie Bush's house, Jimmy Clausen, etc.) Two words: Matt (bleeping) Leinart. Ever since the Rose Bowl, when ever so gracious in defeat he took a pot shot at the 'Horns in his post game interview, watching his stock fall has been like watching the Hindenberg collapse on the tarmac. His collapse from golden boy to tin man in just 4 months has been breathtaking. Matt Leinart at the NFL Draft And it's all been covered live by ESPN, Fox Sports, SI, et al. The worst part of it, its not entirely his fault. While NO ONE can understand/forgive/disinfect his interest in a certain hotel heiress, the overhyping media juggernaut that is ESPN enjoyed tearing him down as much as it loved building him up. After leading the number 1 team in the country for three solid years, and carrying an ungodly winning streak into the Rose Bowl, the unthinkable happened. They lost. To a better team. Please remember USC was supposed to be the best team Ev-Ah. ESPN was running polls prior to the Rose Bowl asking how this yet uncrowned national champion would stack up against the all-time great teams. At that point it was presumed Leinart could not only wakl on water, but would play the all mighty (Ditka!) closely in a game of one-on-one, on the water. Oops. Someone got in the way of that. After the loss ESPN, credibility now completely out the window, had to save face. So they grabbed a flame thrower and torched the temple they had built up. And the intent was never to raise it again in three days. The intent was to bury it deep. And they did. All of a sudden Leinart didn't have a strong enough arm. He wasn't good as advertised. His 40 was too slow. His combine wasn't that impressive. He's a problem child. That Jay Culter guy has a better arm. Look what he did at Vandy, Leinart couldn't have done that. And of course, Vince Young. By draft day Leinart had gone from poster child to problem child. #1 to number #10. He'd lost millions and ended up with the Cardinals. What made the story even more nauseating was how Leinart handled it. Whoever gave Matt PR advice during the past few months was most likely the same person who gave childcare advice to the Lindberghs. The man completely forgot how to behave. He forgot how to smile. He forgot that no matter what he did, it was going to be on Sportscenter at some point. Happy to drink down the limelight during USC's glory days, he wreched at the taste of fame when the media went sour. His "I'd rather be eating my own feces" smirk before, during, and after the draft was impressive. His decisions left something to be desired. The incredulous response, when the news got out that he was living well beyond the means of 21/22 year old college student. Oh, my dad's paying for me and our star receiver to live here. The fact that you're hanging out with Nick Lachey, well, that speaks volumes on its own. His malcontent, its not going my way, demeanor throughout the draft likely cost him a significant amount as well. Reacting like a spoiled child when people question you does not bode well in the National Football League where, more often than not, you're going to get your ass handed to you on "any given sunday." Finally, Paris Hilton. You've gotta be kidding me. News flash. Unless you're in 311, its never okay to go after a person who's film resume includes night-vision porn and an extensive Google search list about her going down on some Greek dude. I wish him luck. I harbor no ill will towards him. I'm just sick of the story of his firey collapse. And I'm sick of him doing everything in his power to fan those flames. Points were also awarded to Reggie Bush, the Clausens, and "Fire Lloyd Carr". On the flip side, I am very excited about the upcoming QB war between Ann Arbor and South Bend. While Clausen's antics were both annoying and incredibly arrogant, he has done something right. He's given us a focal point for our rage at Notre Dame. Every great college football team needs a spearhead, a rallying point, a target. For Notre Dame hat person will be Jimmy Clausen. He is arrogant. He is short. He is brash. He is flashy. He comes from a line of relatively successful D1 QBs. He looks like a Maltese plugged into a wall socket. But, he is a superbly talented quarterback. He is a good recruiter. He will make Notre Dame a better team over the next four years regardless of whether he plays a down on that fact alone. But we all expect him to play, and play well. To the North his antithesis awaits. The antonym of Clausen is Ryan Mallett. A giant at 6'7". Quiet and understated. A cannon for an arm. Confident but not arrogant. Superbly talented. Lauded as a phenom from day one. Leadership skills are second nature. Both will be the respective faces of their programs for the next four to five years. Both will be judged against one another. It will be the perfect storyline. The cocky California hotshot versus the quiet Texas gunslinger. Man, its going to be fun to watch. 2) Your head coach comes down with a mystery illness and has to step aside. You get to hand pick the replacement for the 2006 season. Who gets your vote? Kyle already went through the list of coaches at premier programs that should be considered. While I agree Kirk Ferentz is an excellent coach, he's not on my list. There's only one name on my list. Pat Hill. On the mustache alone he gets the job. However his successes on the field merit a glance from everyone. Six consecutive bowl invites and and 38-7 home record in 8 years at Fresno State. Anybody, Anytime, Anywhere. I love that motto. He protects his house. His players actually go to class. He took over a program that at best could be described as the back of the short bus and has turned it around. Because Academics are truly an important issue at Michigan (at least I'd like to believe they are), he'd fit the bill there. Despite the fact that Fresno plays in the WAC, Hill has stockpiled great games against great programs. Last year he almost toppled USC with vastly inferior talent. Over the last 8 years Fresno state has beaten premier programs like Wisconsin, UCLA, and Virginia. Follow the link to his profile. It's an impressive resume. If Hill can be competitive in that environment, I can only imagine/drool at the possibility of him recruiting at Michigan and fielding a team with that kind of talent. 3) Lastly, we'll mix the football and the blogging together here. If you could have anyone switch allegiances and start covering your team, who you gonna pick? Much like Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas, the Michigan-blog-o-sphere is jammed with excellent writers and bloggers. Mgoblog, RBUAS, Schembechler Hall, iBlog For Cookies, and many other great sites (at right). If you're not reading them, you should be. The consensus seems to be that in terms of blogging for a single school, Brian's work at Mgoblog is the standard all others are judged by. I could not agree more. However, Kyle's work over at Dawg Sports continually leaves me scratching my head as to 1) how he able to write like that, 2) how was he able to make the correlation between a Cylon and the President of UGA, and 3) how in God's name does he have time to do it all? Kyle covers everything Georgia athletics has to offer with both insight and enthusiasm. Whether it's gymnastics, basketball or football, Kyle knows it and covers it. I'm always excited to see what he comes up with next, and his work always exceeds my expectations. Again, if you're not reading him, you should be. 2:07 pm	Rose Bowl The Rose Bowl is an annual American college football game, usually played on January 1 (New Year's Day) at the stadium of the same name in Pasadena, California. When New Year's Day falls on a Sunday the game is then played on the following Monday. Twice (in 2002 and 2006) the Rose Bowl game was also the BCS National Championship Game. (Comment on this)
